BLACKPINK’s LISA Scores the First Top 40 Hit Among K-Pop Acts on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Chart

For the past two months (almost), Lisa of the band Blackpink has been making history left and right on the Billboard charts in America. She has shown over and over that she can climb higher, sell more and reach new lists that few, if any, K-pop musicians before her could manage. This frame is no different, as one of her latest focus cuts improves once again on a notoriously competitive ranking in the U.S., and in doing so, she reaches an important milestone that no artist from her genre has hit before.

On this week’s edition of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs ranking, Billboard’s chart that lists the most-consumed tracks that can be labeled as hip-hop, rap or R&B (using a methodology that combines sales, streams and radio play), Lisa’s single “Money” jumps nearly 10 spaces, lifting from No. 47 to No. 38. The smash is quickly gaining ground, and now it has become a proper genre hit in the U.S.

“Money” is now the first top 40 single from a K-pop musician in the history of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Lisa is actually originally from Thailand, but she launched her career in South Korea. On her own, she has reached a number of genre-specific Billboard lists, but the bulk of her output has been with the band Blackpink, one of the most successful K-pop names of all time, so Lisa is often considered a K-pop musician herself.

Lisa made history when “Money” first arrived, as it brought her to Billboard’s rap-leaning rankings for the first time. “Money”  also debuted at No. 1 on the list’s component Rap Digital Song Sales chart, instantly making her the first solo female K-pop artist to run the show on that specific tally. It took some time, but the tune eventually found its way to the more all-encompassing Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as well.

This week, “Money” leaps over a number of big hits from major players in the rap, hip-hop and R&B spaces, with the K-pop icon’s single beating out songs from Drake (“No Friends In The Industry,” No. 39 and “In the Bible” with Lil Durk and Giveon, No. 40), Doja Cat (“Ain’t Shit,” No. 41) and even Khalid’s just-released tune “Present” (No. 48).
